Last Friday
we celebrated the World Day of Osteoporosis. Lots have been updated and you are
encouraged to take the health of your bone seriously from early years. This is
because our bones are active living tissue comprised of a myriad of cells,
blood vessels, proteins and minerals. And as you are born, your body contains
300 soft bones which are transformed during childhood and then adolescence into
hard bones. As a result the adult skeleton has 206 bones which keep changing throughout
lifespan.
Peak
bone mass is achieved for both males and females by the mid-twenties.
Thereafter, a gradual decline into old age occurs in men, while a plateau
followed by an accelerated period of bone loss for several years after the
menopause occurs in women.
