Resistance exercise training in elderly population

The decline in muscle strength and mass during aging has been linked to physical frailty, falls, functional decline and impaired mobility in elderly people. There are many reasons why it is happening, however the most understandable are: chronic illness, a sedentary lifestyle, nutritional deficiencies and aging itself. All those reasons contribute to muscle weakness and loss of skeletal muscle mass in people of advanced age.

Interestingly in 1994  The New England Journal of Medicine examined, the high-intensity resiststance exercise training, multinutrient supplementation in elderly population.

The results revealed that the high-intensity resiststance exercise training increases muscle strength and size, gait velocity, stair-climbing and level of spontaneous physical activity.

After 20 years the results of this research are implemented as a evidence based practice only in 20%.
